Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting

Information
Thank you for your enquiry about the WEA Interpreting Course. This course is for those
People in the community with strong communication skills in English, to help other members of their community to overcome the language barriers and cultural differences they encounter. This course equips learners with high levels of language skills in both their first language and English, to undertake interpreting work at a basic level of two-way communication.

Although there are no formal entry requirements for the qualification, selection onto the course leading to this qualification is by assessment of the first language and English skills of the student. The qualification is suitable for anyone over 19, however a good understanding and knowledge of the communities you represent is desirable, along with some previous interpreting experience, either formal or informal.

The course is accredited at Level 3 through Ascentis and runs for 85 taught hours with a minimum of 30 hours of home study. The course is usually offered 2 days a week for 17 sessions from 9.30am-2.30pm. We expect 100% attendance on the course and this is compulsory for the first 6 weeks of the course.

Selection is by application form and you need to meet the following criteria:
 Good spoken and written English
Fluency in one of the local community languages
An understanding and knowledge of the community you represent
Some previous interpreting experience, formal or informal

If you meet the above criteria, you will be invited to the compulsory 3 hour pre-course assessment meeting. At this first meeting the tutor will talk to you about the course content in more detail and you will also meet the other learners. As there are no formal entry requirements for the qualification, however you need to have fluent English to complete the course, so during the first meeting you will participate in a short assessment of your English language reading, speaking, listening and writing skills to check that you are working at the correct level in order to attend the rest of the course. The tutor will let you know if you have passed the initial assessment as soon as possible after the test.

Every student has to have a same language partner on the course to enable discussion of terminology and role-play practice and assessment. We need to make sure that at least one other learner on the course shares your community language. You are assessed in interpreting skills in just one community language on the course.

About the Course
The course consists of 4 mandatory units, 2 optional units and a two-way interpretation.

Mandatory Units:
 Preparing for Community Interpreting Assignments
 Supporting Interpreting through Sight Translation
Develop your Performance as a Community Interpreter
Working as a Community Interpreter in Public Services

These units are completed through building up a portfolio of evidence made up of assessment tasks, including written work. These units will give you an understanding of the role of a community interpreter and the responsibilities it carries.

Optional Units:
Planning to work as a Community Interpreter within Social Services
Planning to work as a Community Interpreter within the Health Service

In this unit, learners will develop an understanding of interpreting within the Health Service and Social Services. Students will examine scenarios in which they may be asked to interpret. Students will identify and translate relevant terminology and compile a glossary that can be used in preparation for interpreting assignments in a particular public service scenario. These units are completed through building up a portfolio of evidence made up of assessment tasks, including written work.

Two-way Interpretation:
This unit helps the student develop their interpreting skills, i.e. selecting the appropriate interpreting technique, carrying out interpreting between two languages and developing the confidence and interpersonal skills to manage the communication between two different language speakers. This unit is assessed through the completion of an externally set task, and includes interpreting role-play performance, peer and mentor/trainer assessment and a portfolio of evidence.

You must successfully complete all units to achieve the full qualification at level 3.

If you wish to apply for a place on the course, please complete the enclosed application form and post/email it to Susan Heptinstall, WEA, 21 Portland Terrace,
Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 1QQ – email sheptinstall@wea.org.uk

Zycze powodzenia.
